My Great Grandfather was Johnathan W. Bor 1844 and fought in the civil war for the south. My Great Great Grandfather was Robert born around 1820. Any info would be great.

It is a wonderful nice website. Among my ancestors are Tyre Chafin and Emily Frances Poindexter. I don't know who their parents are. Their daughter Emily Frances Chafin (1825-1903) married William Green Jones (1822-1888). Their daughter was Sarah Poindex er Jones (1854-1916) who married William Donoho Elliott (1856-1936). My great grandparents. This is all I know and I couldn't find them on your list. I'm sure then came from Virginia then No. Carolina, and eventually Georgia.

Just found your site. Has some very useful information in it, which I thank you for (private family research only). My last link to the POINGDESTRE name, was my 7th generation great grandmother, Elizabeth POINGDESTRE b.1665 (est) on Jersey Island. She mar ied George BANDINEL, and from there the POINGDESTRE name leaves my family tree for ever.

According to your records John and Christian only had 2 children and John is not mentioned. How do I know which is accurate? I would appreciate your help. Thank you, Marta

I have only been looking for my family roots for about 4 days. I have had so much help on my fathers side. Now I'm trying my mothers. My grandfather was Charles Walter Poindexter married to Matilda Ellen Rdell Morrison. They lived in Texas. The Dallas Duncanville area. They had 6 children(most of which are still alive) but I have lost contact. The oldest child was Charles Joseph, then Lucy, then Matzi?, then Jimmie Ellen, then Richard, the Olin(he died at 18 to 20) I think the story goes, he was thrown out of a jeep. Does anybody know me?

To Bonnie's comments below. Thanks for the information on where the Huguenots fit in. When folks say that the Poingdestres on Jersey were Huguenots, I figured this conflicted with the fact that Poingdestre is indiginous to Jersey, predating the existanc of Huguenots in France. Add to that the fact that our immigrant was a member of Bruton Parish Church, of the Church of England, or English protestant, not French prostestant. So I am glad to finally find out where the Huguenot lines come from.

Jamie, you are doing a great job. Since we discussed at last PDA meeting whether or not George Poindexter was a Huguenot, thought I'd let you know that the National Huguenot Society has established a line for those of us who descend from him. It goes: Rev Nicolas Effard B. d. 27 Apr 1638, Bur cemetery of St. Saviour, Isle of Jersey. m/1 to Marie leDuc (dau. of Rev. Nicholas leDuc, rector of St. Jean in Jersey) m/2 on 21 Jul 1587 to Sara de Caumont (dau of Rev. Pierre de Caumont, rector of St. Peter in Jersey. He had formerl been rector of Sainte Marie du Mont in Normandy, but fled to Jersey with other refugees from the St. Bartholomew Day [massacre] in Sep 1568. Children: (one of 10) ELIZABETH EFFARD: bp 12 Dec 1597; d m. 14 Dec 1614 at St. Saviour's Church to Thomas Poingdester. Their children: Philip Poindexter: bp 11 Feb 1621 Jacob Poindexter: bp 2 May 1624 Rachel Poindexter George Poindexter: b 23 Dec 1627; m bef 1657 to Susanna ?. In 1657, during the Cromwellian Revolt, immigrated to Virginia, settled in York CO, VA. References of course are Landers and Turk, Marion G., The Quiet Adventurers in North America (Heritage Books reprint). That's for anyone who is interested. You join through a state society, but national is in Bloomington, MN 55420-3535 at 9033 Lyndale Ave S. Suite 108. Keep up the good work! Bonnie

I am the mother of two young poindexters, Charlie Hugh Poindexter IV and Laurana Poindexter. Unfortunately I am currently estranged from their Poindexter father. However I would love to know if my children's ancestors are your poindexter line. I can trace my own family's tree back quite a ways and I would like to trace the kids' father's side also. At least they could feel some type of connection and pride to their name then. I would appreciate any help. Their father comes from Richmond, Virginia.

Jamie keep yp the good work and I'll continue to visit this site form time to time. John J. had 7 sons and 2 daughters, 6 of whom are Thomas Philip, John Emsley, Charles Allison, Laura P.J., William M. and Rufus Lafeyette. William M had several children, one of whom is Jesse Lee Poindexter, my grandfather. Howdy to all, from rainy, soggy northern Nevada! To the Guestbook entry by Iris, regarding black Poindexters, I will say that yes, there WERE Poindexters who owned slaves, and probably a greater number than we care to think. I have seen various Last Will & Testaments where slaves were ennumerated among t the deceadant's holdings. Yet last names were not used, so the question of whether or not those slaves took the names of their owners is not thereby addressed. As to how our black Poindexter bretheren attained the name, I have no knowledge of any research being done in that area. This is regrettable, but possibly it is simply because no Poindexters of African-American descent have hitherto come forward with fam ly info. I do understand that the research of families who were slaves is very, very difficult. My husband was involved in a private eye case which happened to involved some genealogy work into a family descended from slaves. When he got back before 190 , they simply had names like "Big Sis" and "Lula," with no last names at all. There is an art and a science to Black family research, but we of white descent seem woefully unfamiliar with it. For my own part, I would be delighted to welcome them into the family fold, however the name came about. It has intrigued me ever since my brother met a black Poindexter man in Seattle, who cheerfully persisted in calling my brother "cousin." I do kno there were a number of Poindexter families in the Hopkinsville, KY area in the mid 1800's, but as they are not my direct kin, I've no idea whether they were slaveholders. But yes, some Poindexters did partake of that unfortunate institution, per the tim s they lived in. I would be truly gratified to see how the Black Poindexters fit into our family tree. Whether by graft or by roots, they would be welcome! Best regards to all, Gloria Atwater

Very interesting! I would like to know if the Poindexters were slaveholders? Did slaves work on the plantations? All the Poindexters @ your site are white. Where did the blacks come in? Please let me know if you have any info. I know that the blacks were named after their owners but I have been told that the Poindexters were never slaves. That's what my family members have told me. My family comes from Hopkinsville KY. They own alot f land there and were farmers. They have their own church and cementary in an area called Dawson Springs. Please let me know if you have anything on this. My grandfather was Earl McClyde Poindexter his father was Claude Poindexter that's all I know. Iris

My father, George William Poingdestre, emigrated from Jersey to Australia in the early 1900's. He married in 1938 and had five children, of which I am one. He died in 1977.

I visited your site to find a connection with my great great grandfather Poingdestre from Queensland, Australia. I'll keep looking into this and hopefully I'll be able to "join" the family.

Happy new year, happy new decade, happy new century and happy new millennium to all!
