What to see on the bus & walking tours
Saturday, June 2nd:
Fly from the United States, arrive at London Gatwick Airport and travel for about 1 hour to the hotel in Eastbourne. You must make your own flight arrangements from where you live in the United States to Gatwick. You must arrive in time to catch the coach at 12 noon. Suggest you do not fly into Heathrow as you will have to shuttle to Gatwick, which is a distance.
6:30pm Evening Dinner at hotel (same time each night!)
Sunday, June 3rd:
Early am – jet lag permitting, there is time for a stroll along the esplanade, to attend church, or for PDA business.
11am – leave for a coach trip through the beautiful Sussex villages to visit “The Royal Oak”, a pub in the village of Barcombe which is north of the county town of Lewes. There, we will have a buffet lunch and play skittles. Networking and some friendly rivalry with a prize for the winners!
Monday, June 4th:
A coach trip, firstly, to Pevensey castle where our ancestor landed in the year 1066, then to the town of Battle where William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Then to a local vineyard to taste English wine. If time permits, we will also go to Bodiam Castle. Entrance fee to the keep of Pevensey Castle is not included in cost of trip as most of the castle is free to enter.
Tuesday, June 5th:
An excursion to Singleton to visit the Weald and Downland Village, featuring old restored country houses saved from demolition. Then on to the Fishbourne Roman Villa.
A free day to explore either Eastbourne, or Brighton and the Royal Pavilion (Palace of King George). Perhaps time today for PDA Committee work.
Thursday, June 7th:
A day out to London probably by train. Cost of train is included in trip (which includes any underground and red bus travel). Entry fees to any London sites is not included. A choice of 3 possibilities:
- Those less able can take the local buses or a tour bus around the city and go to one famous venue, or
- Those who are fit for walking can make a guided walking tour of either the London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster, St James Park, Buckingham Palace, Harrods, or
- Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Bank of England Museum, St Paul’s Cathedral.
Friday, June 8th:
An excursion to the Amberley Working Museum. This is wonderful for all ages and is set in an old chalk-pit where one of the James Bonds was filmed. There is an old train and buses to take you around to visit the old industries which have been preserved, such as clay-pipe making and printing. After that, we go into the old town of Arundel with its beautiful castle and cathedral. (anybody not museum minded may spend the whole day there and even take a boat trip on the river!)
Evening - Party in the hotel. Bring a drink or delicacy typical of your town or region to tempt the taste buds of your cousins.
Saturday, June 9th:
Return to Gatwick airport to fly to Jersey (optional add on, click here for details), other plans you made, or back home to the United States. Bus transportation will be available from Eastbourne to London Gatwick Airport.
