Cemeteries

Surrey County Genealogical Association Cemetery Project

The SCGA announced a project to map county cemeteries using GPS so their locations will always be known into the future. There are many Poindexter descendants today with roots in Surrey County, so this information may be of interest to you.

Be sure to also visit the SCGA home page where you will find links to lists of people buried in Surrey County cemeteries. Sorry, I didn't find Poindexter listed in a cemetery, but you may find other surname branches of your family tree. THe web site also lists a contact for Poindexter research in the county.

The announcement:

February 20, 2006

To:  All SCGA Members and Other Interested Parties
Subject:  Locating Cemeteries

It has been called to my attention that there is a need for identifying Surry County cemeteries and documenting their locations by GPS coordinates and driving directions.

Such a project would not entail listing the occupants (survey), but would simply be a source for locating a particular cemetery.  As I'm sure you know, many are difficult to find in remote areas; and, in many cases, permission of the land owner is necessary to gain access.

We have the means to document the data and the means to make it available to all.  It would be posted on our web site and made available to local government offices, libraries, or to any organization where inquiries might be made.

It is our hope that by making the data available to certain government entities we can save some cemeteries from being destroyed or lost due to development or other reasons.

Bob Carter has agreed to type and format the information.  Our association will purchase a handheld GPS unit which will be available for checkout from Fletcher Edwards.  I will do all I can to visit cemeteries and record the required information.

If you would like to help us in this effort please call me at 336-789-8644 or e-mail me at ahennis@triad.rr.com  If you are unable to help but know the location of a remote cemetery, please let me know and we will take it from there.

Sincerely,
Andy Hennis
President, SCGA
