Writing Your Scholarship Essay

on a mobile phone

The account you create to apply for the Scholarship can be accessed from a computer or from your phone, using the same username and password. You can enter information in the Application Form from either device. You may find it easier to write and edit your essay to perfection on a laptop or computer using a full keyboard and a display larger than your phone screen. But if you don't have access to a computer or laptopm you can go to B (for iPhone) or C (for Android) below.

You may prefer to save your Essay in PDF format to ensure the formatting stays consistent. If your Word document is finished, it's often a good idea to "Save as PDF" before uploading.

A. Easiest - use your phone to enter info on the form - but upload the essay from a computer:

  1. While logged into your Scholarship account on your phone, enter text into the Application Form fields, then use the Save and Return Later button at the bottom of the form.
  2. Write and save your essay on a computer.
  3. Log into your Scholarship Application account from that computer.
  4. Continue filling out the form if you have not completed all required fields.
  5. Use the Upload button on the form to add your Essay.
  6. Submit the Application Form.

B. Essay on your iPhone

Creating and saving a Word document to iCloud Drive on your iPhone is a straightforward process using the Microsoft Word app (available on the App Store). Next steps on your iPhone:

  1. Open Microsoft Word: tap the icon to open the app.
  2. Create a New Document: Tap + (plus icon) or New, and select Blank document or a template.
  3. Type Your Content: Once you are finished writing, tap the three dots (...) in the top-right corner.
  4. Save the File: Tap Save or Save a Copy.
    1. Tap Files App (under the "Other Storage" section).
    2. Rename your file at the top if needed.
  5. Select iCloud Drive:
    1. Tap iCloud Drive from the list of locations.
    2. Choose a specific folder if you like, then tap Move or Save in the top-right corner.

Pro Tips for Managing Files on your iPhone:

  • PDF Conversion: You can save your Word document as a PDF. To do this in Word, follow the same steps but select Export instead of Save, and choose PDF (.pdf).
  • Automatic Sync: If you have an Office 365 subscription, changes you make to a file opened from iCloud Drive will often sync automatically. Without a subscription, you may need to save a new copy to iCloud each time you make major edits.
  • Accessing Later: You can always find your document again by opening the Files app on your iPhone and selecting the iCloud Drive tab.

C. Essay on Your Android Phone

You can create and save a Word document directly on your phone using the Microsoft Word app or Google Docs, both available on the Google Play Store.

  1. Save the File to Your Phone or Google Drive:
    • Directly on Phone: Create the document in the Word or Google Docs app, use the "Save As" feature to store it in your Documents or Downloads folder.
    • From a PC: Upload your finished Word document to Google Drive on your computer so it appears on your phone automatically.
  2. Upload your Essay via the Application Form when you reach the upload section:
      1. Tap Choose File.
      2. A "Choose an action" menu will appear at the bottom. Select Files (sometimes called "Media Picker").
      3. Tap the three horizontal lines (Menu) in the top-left corner to find your document:
        • Select Google Drive if you uploaded the file from your PC.
        • Select Documents or Downloads if you saved it directly to your phone storage.
      4. Tap your file to attach it to the form.
    • Quick Alternatives for Moving Files if you have trouble finding your file, use these methods to move it from a PC to your phone:
      • Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share): Wirelessly send files from your PC to your phone if both have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
      • USB Transfer: Connect your phone to your PC with a cable, select File Transfer in the phone's notification settings, and drag the file into your phone's Documents folder.
